The caves in Gibraltar’s honeycomb
echo with the voices of past
visitors.
Inside this rock all is hidden
from the outside world
secret desires can happen
and no one would know
stepping out into the brightness
allows the sunshine to hide
blushes
of secret desires.
Walk the streets and
visit the cafes
taste the delights
of a vibrant menu.
Walk the leafy lanes
hand in hand
slow and gentle
the roadway rises
twisting this way
twisting that
holding hands
hearts pit-a-pat.
Take a stroll to St Michaels cave
feel the chill
from your toes to your face
cooling the ardour
yet fanning the flames
and as the coolness
envelopes
the cave becomes
a home
to two lovers
whose hearts
rise like
the rock of majestic Gibraltar.
I like the ending.

Martin, you didn’t just walk us through Gibraltar’s varying scenery; you walked us through the ups and downs of lovers’ reactions to their environments. How much the loves in our lives are affected and altered by the surroundings in which they are lived out! Thank you for reminding us of this fact in such a lilting manner.

I lived in Gibraltar for two years, long time ago and I still love the place.
